Sawdust around base of tree stump?

Question by Seneca: Sawdust around base of tree stump?
We lost a pine tree during the last storm and the yard service cut the tree off, but left the stump. We need to get a stump grinder, but haven’t yet. I noticed the other day that all around the base of the tree looked like sand. On closer inspection, it appears to be sawdust from the tree. My husband said it might be termites or pine beetles drilling into it so he poured gasoline around the circumference…Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this kind of thing? Or suggestions as to what we should do. I’m afraid if it’s pine beetles they will spread to our other pine trees.
It’s been several weeks since the tree was cut. The “sawdust” wasn’t there until just recently. From a distance, it looks like big chunks of sand. It’s not just a light sprinkling of sawdust from when the tree was cut down about a month ago.

Well, if the yard service cut down the tree, then logic says there would be sawdust around it.
