I had an ant problem with the bowl of cat food in the house. They would find it and all night long would be getting in it. I found they hate petroleum jelly and won’t cross it.Maybe try smearing some on the trunk for a 6″ or so distance .Don’t leave any gaps for them to bypass the goo.First hose the tree down really good so there are no or very few ants in the branches. Then put the jelly all around the trunk. Keep applying as it wears off during the year.
